More Than a Magazine: How Tracks Took Its Surf Culture Legacy Into Online Retail

Tracks Shop is a curated online marketplace from Tracks, the Australian surf magazine known as The Surfers' Bible since 1970, bringing together independent surf, apparel, accessories, and lifestyle brands in one place. It currently lists 1,800+ products from 20+ vendors. After more than 50 years of telling the stories of surf culture, Tracks wanted its community to be able to discover and shop from the brands that are part of that world. Shipturtle configured the multi-vendor marketplace on Shopify and supported Tracks from setup through launch and day-to-day operations under the Ultimate plan.

INTRODUKTION

For more than 50 years, Tracks has been telling the stories of surf culture. Known as The Surfers' Bible since 1970, Tracks Magazine has brought together the surfers, brands, places, and stories that have shaped the community. But Tracks had an idea that went beyond its pages: what if the community that followed its stories could also discover and shop from the independent brands that were part of that culture, all in one place?

That idea became Tracks Shop, a curated online marketplace bringing together independent surf, apparel, accessories, and lifestyle brands. The vision was clear, but bringing it to life involved more than creating another online store. Tracks wanted to bring multiple independent businesses together while making sure products, vendors, orders, and fulfilment could all work within one connected marketplace.

That is a different challenge from running a traditional e-commerce store. In a multi-vendor marketplace, several businesses operate under one roof. Each vendor brings its own products and fulfilment requirements, while the marketplace owner needs visibility across the entire operation. For Tracks, that meant a structure that could accommodate different brands without making the experience complicated for customers or the internal team.

Tracks turned to Shipturtle to configure the marketplace on Shopify and to work alongside the team on the operational details behind it, from vendor setup to returns.

What Were Tracks' Biggest Challenges Building a Multi-Vendor Surf Marketplace?

Tracks' challenges were less about the storefront and more about everything behind it: structuring vendors, organising a varied catalogue, defining what happens after every order, and planning for the parts that do not always go to plan.

Turning a Community Idea Into a Multi-Vendor Structure

The challenge: Tracks needed several independent brands to operate within one marketplace, each with its own products and fulfilment needs, while the Tracks team kept a clear view of the wider business from a single place.

The solution: Shipturtle worked alongside Tracks to configure the multi-vendor marketplace on Shopify. That included setting up vendor accounts, organising product assignments, and establishing workflows for routing orders to the relevant vendors, so each brand could operate within the marketplace while Tracks managed the whole operation centrally.

Making a Diverse Catalogue Feel Like One Shop

The challenge: The catalogue spanned surfwear, apparel, accessories, prints, and lifestyle products from different brands. Simply uploading products was not enough. They had to be organised in a way that made sense to customers and stayed manageable as the marketplace grew.

The solution: Shipturtle worked with the Tracks team on product migration and catalogue organisation. That meant mapping categories and subcategories, defining attributes such as age, gender, and colour, and working through regional publishing requirements. Shipping profiles and tracking configurations were set up at the same time, so product management stayed connected to how orders would actually be fulfilled. Catalogue work continued as an ongoing exercise rather than a one-time upload.

Building the Processes Behind Every Order

The challenge: Getting products onto the website was only one part of the job. Once customers start shopping, the marketplace needs clear answers to practical questions. How does an order reach the right vendor? How is shipping managed? How are commissions calculated? When does a vendor get paid?

The solution: Shipturtle configured vendor-specific order workflows and worked through shipping and fulfilment arrangements with Tracks. It also helped establish commission and payout processes, giving the team a clearer way to monitor order-level payouts and manage vendor payments. The focus was on making sure the marketplace could manage what happened after an order was placed, not just take the order.

Handling Returns When Multiple Vendors Are Involved

The challenge: Returns become more involved when several vendors are part of the process. A customer raises a request, the merchant reviews it, the vendor may need to receive and inspect the product, and the refund must then be handled, with different responsibilities depending on why the product is being returned.

The solution: Shipturtle mapped the full return journey with Tracks, covering customer return requests, merchant approvals, vendor responsibilities, return shipping, and refund handling. It also prepared standard operating procedures and vendor instructions, so vendors knew what to do once a return was approved, including how return shipping costs would be handled in different situations. The result is a defined process for the team to follow instead of working out every return from scratch.

What Has Tracks Achieved With Shipturtle?

Tracks now runs a live multi-vendor operation behind its storefront, built around clear processes rather than ad hoc fixes.

20+ Vendors and 1,800+ Products Live

Tracks Shop currently lists more than 20 independent vendors and over 1,800 products, spanning surfwear, apparel, accessories, prints, and lifestyle products, all managed within one Shopify multi-vendor marketplace.

A Marketplace Structure That Works for Vendors and the Tracks Team

Each brand has a way to operate within the marketplace, with its own vendor account and assigned products, while Tracks manages the wider business from one place.

An Organised Catalogue Built to Keep Growing

Categories, subcategories, and attributes such as age, gender, and colour give Tracks a catalogue that makes sense to shoppers and stays manageable as new products and brands are added.

Defined Processes for Orders, Payouts, and Returns

Vendor-specific order workflows, commission and payout processes, and a documented returns journey mean the team has a clear path for what happens after every order, including the exceptions.

Ongoing Support Beyond Launch

A marketplace is not finished the moment it goes live. Shipturtle continued working alongside the team on catalogue updates, product categorisation, vendor coordination, troubleshooting, and documentation, and helped refine processes as Tracks' requirements became clearer. For Tracks, the daily assistance that comes with the Ultimate plan meant a team to work through the practical details with, rather than managing every new challenge alone.

RESULTATERNE

Tracks has spent more than five decades connecting with the surf community through its stories. Tracks Shop adds another way to bring that community together, this time through the independent brands and products that are part of its world.

Behind the shopping experience, which already spans 20+ vendors and 1,800+ products, sits a multi-vendor operation with vendor workflows, an organised catalogue, shipping and payout processes, and a defined approach to returns. Getting there took more than switching on an app. It took working through the details, coordinating different requirements, and having ongoing support as the marketplace took shape.
