How Cart 8 Launched a Direct-to-Consumer Food Marketplace for South Australia with Shipturtle

Cart 8 is a direct-to-consumer marketplace connecting South Australian food and beverage producers with local shoppers, removing the retailers and distributors that traditionally sit between producers and customers. Founder Ethan Tan, who spent 20 years in the food manufacturing industry, used his existing producer relationships to onboard Cart 8's vendor base and worked with Shipturtle to build a marketplace platform tailored to a direct-from-producer model, including custom vendor onboarding and product page changes ahead of the brand's recent launch into the South Australian market.

INTRO

Cart 8 is a direct-to-consumer marketplace built to fix two problems at once: food delivery in Australia had become expensive for consumers, and food producers were losing margin to the retailers and distributors standing between them and the people who actually buy their products. Founder Ethan Tan spent 20 years manufacturing food products for brands across Australia before starting Cart 8, and saw firsthand how a small number of retailers controlling the market squeezed producer margins and slowed innovation.

Ethan's answer was to remove the middle layer entirely. Cart 8 lets South Australian food and beverage producers sell directly to consumers through a single marketplace, rather than going through the retail and distribution channels that typically take the largest cut. Because Ethan had spent two decades building relationships across the food manufacturing industry, he was able to bring producers onto Cart 8 directly using those existing connections rather than starting vendor recruitment from zero.

A marketplace alone would not have solved the delivery cost problem, so Cart 8 paired its producer network with dedicated fulfilment infrastructure: producers supply directly to a centralized facility, orders are consolidated there, and customers receive everything from multiple producers in one delivery instead of paying separate delivery fees to each vendor.

Shipturtle built the multi-vendor platform underneath this model and worked directly with Ethan on the specific customizations his direct-to-producer approach required, supporting Cart 8 through its recent launch into the South Australian market.

"I've seen what happens when a handful of retailers control the market: innovation slows, quality suffers, and local producers get squeezed out. Producers, growers, and makers deserve an alternative way to reach you."

BRIDGING GAPS WITH SOLUTIONS

What Were Cart 8's Biggest Challenges Launching a Direct-to-Producer Marketplace?

Cart 8's challenges centered on building a marketplace experience that worked for producers with no retail-platform experience and for shoppers used to conventional grocery delivery, rather than the more common early-marketplace problem of finding vendors to onboard.

Customizing Vendor Onboarding for First-Time Sellers

The challenge: Many of Cart 8's producers were selling through a digital marketplace for the first time, and the standard vendor login and onboarding period was not suited to how quickly Ethan needed to bring his existing network of contacts onto the platform.

The solution: Shipturtle customized the vendor login and onboarding period, shortening it and making it configurable so Cart 8 could control exactly how quickly new producers moved from signup to selling, without being locked into a fixed default onboarding timeline.

Redesigning the Product Page for a Direct-From-Producer Model

The challenge: A direct-to-producer marketplace needs to communicate provenance and freshness in ways a standard multi-vendor product page does not automatically handle, since shoppers browsing Cart 8 are choosing specific South Australian producers, not just products.

The solution: Shipturtle made targeted UI changes to the product page to better surface producer information and improve the overall buying experience, adjustments built specifically around Cart 8's positioning rather than a generic marketplace template.

Making the Economics of Direct Delivery Work

The challenge: Cutting out retailers only solves half of the affordability problem if delivery itself remains expensive. Cart 8 needed an operating model where consolidated, direct delivery could actually be cheaper than the traditional retail-plus-delivery combination it was replacing.

The solution: Cart 8 paired the Shipturtle-built marketplace with a dedicated fulfilment partner operating a centralized warehousing and delivery facility, so orders from multiple producers are consolidated and delivered together, keeping delivery costs down while still supporting a growing producer base.

THE RESULTS

Cart 8 today operates as a direct-to-consumer marketplace for South Australian food and beverage producers, with a platform shaped around the specific onboarding and product-page needs of first-time digital sellers. Ethan Tan's long-term goal is to keep growing that producer base and prove that removing retail middlemen can mean fairer margins for producers and better prices for shoppers, without asking either side to compromise on quality or convenience.

As Cart 8 continues to add producers and expand delivery coverage across South Australia, the platform Shipturtle built is designed to scale with that growth rather than require another round of custom rework.
