Overview
Live Chat lets your customers message vendors in real time about a product or about the vendor in general. As the marketplace merchant, you can see and join every conversation, and chat privately with your vendors. Live Chat is an add-on, and only signed-in customers can use it, so make sure the add-on is active on your plan and customer accounts are turned on in Shopify.
In this guide, you'll learn how to:
- Add the Live Chat button and the Messages page to your Shopify theme.
- Understand what customers see when they chat with a seller.
- Find, reply to, and manage conversations from the Live Chat inbox.
- Chat privately with your vendors.
- Connect a custom storefront using the Live Chat API.

5. Chat with Seller on Vendor Profile Pages
If you use the Shipturtle Seller Profile block, a Chat with seller button appears next to the vendor's name automatically. No setup is needed.
- Clicking Chat with seller opens the Messages page with that vendor.
- If the customer already has a conversation with the vendor, it opens. Otherwise, a new one starts with their first message.
- The Contact tab on the vendor profile is hidden while Live Chat is active.

6. What Your Customers See
Chatting from a product page
- The customer clicks Chat with
. If they aren't signed in, they are asked to sign in and then returned to the product. - A chat panel opens with the vendor name and the product details.
- The customer types a message or taps a quick reply chip, and sends it.
Each product has its own conversation, so customers see their earlier messages when they return. Files can be attached after the first text message.
Using the Messages page
- The Inbox lists every conversation with a preview, time, and unread badge.
- Customers can search by product or seller, and open a conversation to reply or attach files.
- Delivered changes to Seen once the seller reads the message.

Search and filter conversations
- Search conversations...: search by customer name or email, product, or subject. Merchants can also search by vendor.
- All, Open, and Resolved tabs: switch between conversation statuses.
- Filters (funnel icon): filter by sender email, vendor (merchants only), type (Product or General), and date.

- Messages can be up to 5,000 characters.
View conversation context
The Context Details panel on the right shows where the conversation started, the customer's name and email, and the product details. Click the product title to open the product in Shipturtle.

9. Resolve, Archive or Delete a Conversation

10. If the customer writes again
- A resolved or archived conversation reopens with its full history.
- A deleted conversation is not restored. The customer's next message starts a new one.
11. Notifications
- New messages, typing indicators, and read receipts appear in real time in an open conversation.
- When you reply, the customer gets an email asking them to sign in and reply. At most one email is sent per conversation every 24 hours.
- Merchants and vendors aren't emailed about new customer messages, so check the Live Chat inbox regularly.
